Federal Crop Insurance

  • First established in 1938

  • Major modifications in 1980 and 1994

  • Covers losses from natural causes such as weather, disease, and fire caused by lightning

  • May also cover revenue losses due to market fluctuations

  • Premiums are paid by farmers, subsidized by Federal government

  • Federal crop insurance comprises approximately 8% of total 2014 Farm Bill (www.thefarmbill.com)

  • Private (not federally subsidized - premium paid by the farmer) policies that may work with or without a subsidized policy are also available.
